Summer Fun?
Ahh Summer. Maybe you're planning on relaxing on the beach, hanging out with friends, or reading a good book, leaving exercise as one of the last options that you may or may not end up having time for. In reality, if you're a runner, summer is a
make-it-or-break-it time for you, where you can either look to improve your personal goals through proper training, or waste the season by not exercising. The one major trouble with running during the summer is the heat.
Too much heat can slow your pace and also lead to dehydration troubles, which can be very serious and harmful if not properly treated. Before you decide to lock yourself indoors with air conditioning for the season, there are still alternative methods to continue your training into the warm months of the summer!
- Slowly try to ease yourself into running in the heat. You may have been used to running 3 miles at 7 minute mile pace every other day, but in the summer the heat and humidity take a toll. To avoid becoming tired too quickly, be sure to start your run a bit slower than usual, as well as decreasing your distance. This can be built up throughout the summer in short increments, or whatever feels most comfortable.
- Try to cool yourself before your run by having a slushy or cold drink, and it will carry over into your run, keeping your body from overheating or dehydrating.
- Always wear sunscreen that has a 50spf or higher, because there is nothing worse than running with a sun-burnt body!
- Beat the mid-day sun by going early in the morning or later at night. I personally enjoy running in the morning, as I am able to experience cooler temperatures and feel more energized for the rest of my day.
- If none of those above work for you, a great way to still stay in shape during the hot summers is to cross-train by swimming laps in an outdoor pool. You will not only be getting a productive cardiovascular work out, but you will also be staying refreshed.
